What is Podiatry

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) qualified by his or her education and training to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. The training of DPMs includes human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, sociological and psychological perspectives, general medicine, surgery and pharmacology. Additionally, DPMs complete four years of undergraduate education, four years of graduate education at one of eight accredited podiatric medical colleges, and two to three years of hospital residency training.

Podiatrists can typically perform the following:

  • Diagnose and treat tumors, ulcers, fractures, skin and nail diseases, and deformities
  • Prescribe therapies and perform diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound and lab tests.

  • Treat conditions such as: bone disorders, bunions, corns, calluses, cysts, heel spurs, infections, ingrown nails, and plantar fasciitis.
  • Perform surgeries to correct issues such as bunions, clawtoes, fractures, hammertoes, infections, ruptured Achilles, and other ligaments and tendons.
